Steps to Adoption

In all cases, a property study is usually necessary. A social worker will meet with you and other immediate members of the family at home to take stock of your family dynamics, to explore your reasons for planning to adopt, and to ensure your home is safe and suited to a child—that you do not are now living in a one-bedroom condo on the 11th floor of a high-rise without available play area, for example. The high-rise might not disqualify you, but the single bedroom would probably require moving to a more desirable home.

Most adoptions also require background checks and certification from your physician that that you do not have problems with a health condition that might prevent you from caring for a child.

The theory isn't to prohibit you from becoming an adoptive parent but to guarantee the safety and well-being of the little one you take in.

You'll then proceed through the legal steps of adopting, culminating in a court appearance where in fact the adoption is approved with a judge and finalized. The court will name you—the adoptive parent—since the child's legal parent in lieu of the biological parent or parents. Biological parents must sign off on the legal parental rights before an adoption can go through.

University-based research indicates that secure children have increased empathy, greater self confidence, better relationships with parents and peers, enter school more ready to understand, and can handle their emotions a lot better than their less secure peers. As they grow older, secure children become less inclined to live in poverty, have legal problems, or experience chronic emotional difficulties.
