Steps to Adoption

In most cases, a home study is typically necessary. A social worker will meet with you and other immediate members of the family in your house to take stock of your loved ones dynamics, to explore your reasons for attempting to adopt, and to make fully sure your home is safe and suited to a child—you don't live in a one-bedroom condo on the 11th floor of a high-rise without any available play area, for example. The high-rise might not disqualify you, but the single bedroom would almost certainly require moving to a more desirable home.

Most adoptions also require background checks and certification from your own physician that that you do not suffer from a health condition that might stop you from looking after a child.

The idea isn't to prohibit you from becoming an adoptive parent but to guarantee the safety and well-being of the kid you take in.

You'll then proceed through the legal steps of adopting, culminating in a court appearance where the adoption is approved by a judge and finalized. The court will name you—the adoptive parent—as the child's legal parent instead of the biological parent or parents. Biological parents must sign off on the legal parental rights before an adoption can go through.
