Steps to Adoption

In most cases, a house study is typically necessary. A cultural worker will meet with you and other immediate members of the family at home to take stock of your household dynamics, to explore your reasons for planning to adopt, and to ensure that your home is safe and suited to a child—you never live in a one-bedroom condo on the 11th floor of a high-rise with no available play area, for example. The high-rise might not disqualify you, however the single bedroom would most likely require moving to a more suitable home.

Most adoptions also require background checks and certification from your own physician that you never have problems with a health condition that might keep you from looking after a child.

The theory isn't to prohibit you from becoming an adoptive parent but to ensure the safety and well-being of the kid you take in.

You'll then proceed through the legal steps of adopting, culminating in a court appearance where in actuality the adoption is approved by a judge and finalized. The court will name you—the adoptive parent—while the child's legal parent in lieu of the biological parent or parents. Biological parents must sign off on the legal parental rights before an adoption can go through.
