Steps to Adoption

In every cases, a house study is usually necessary. A cultural worker will meet with you and other immediate members of the family in your home to take stock of your household dynamics, to explore your reasons for planning to adopt, and to make fully sure your home is safe and suited to a child—you do not live in a one-bedroom condo on the 11th floor of a high-rise with no available play area, for example. The high-rise mightn't disqualify you, but the single bedroom would probably require moving to a more suitable home.

Most adoptions also require background checks and certification from your physician that that you don't have problems with a health condition that may stop you from caring for a child.

The idea isn't to prohibit you from becoming an adoptive parent but to ensure the safety and well-being of the kid you take in.

You'll then proceed through the legal steps of adopting, culminating in a court appearance where in fact the adoption is approved by a judge and finalized. The court will name you—the adoptive parent—since the child's legal parent instead of the biological parent or parents. Biological parents must sign off on the legal parental rights before an adoption can go through.
